  4) most car hire companies want to "block off" a sum from your credit card in case you crash or run away with the car, but Gold Car want an up front payment. In my case it was 1,100 Euros in cash or paid by card. They basically indicated that in the unlikely event that bad happens, I should get my money back in 1 or 2 months.

  Update : After this feedback, Goldcar replied to me that I could ask for assistance (see below). I did. I sent them the police report. They said they still won't refund the 40€ extra. Once again, ALL THE THIEVES OF THE ISLAND HAVE A COPY OF THE CAR KEYS GOLDCAR RENT. They open the car with the keys they have and steal everything. Don't rent there.

  1) they lied to me and said the car category I had booked wasn't available so I must pay for a more expensive one. (this wasn't true and I got the car I booked eventually)

  All the thief/mafia of the Island have a copy of the keys of the cars they rent. They open the cars and steal everything inside. They don't tell you that when you rent of course.

  Ordered everything on the nett and when I arived they said because I bought insurance at another place I need to pay 1100eur deposit and on top of that 31eur handling fee which is non refundable. On top of that they made me pay in Norwegian crows and when they refunded the deposit it was in euros, so I lost another 65 euros. Never rent here

  We rented a car last week and felt completely scammed. The guy that checked us in originally and gave us the keys was rude and very short with us both when we picked up and dropped off the car. I can handle poor customer service, but after dropping off the car and the worker had checked over everything and said we were good to go (he walked around the entire outside of the car and sat inside for a minute or so) we received an e-mail stating they were going to charge us 150 euro for a deep cleaning of the car. Sure, the car was sandy plus we left some wrappers on the floor, but certainly nothing that constituted 150 euro of additional cleaning. Also, they made us pay upfront for the gas like I have read on other reviews. I plan on reaching out to the company but if I have as much luck as everyone else I will just be charging this back to our credit card. Avoid this company at all costs - they suck you in with low prices and then charge all sorts of hidden fees.

  We wanted to rent a car and checked prices online. However, when we came to the place it was 360€ instead of 180€. We were explained that online info is not full coz there are many additional fees. Before us there were like 3 groups of people from Spain and other countries who were arguing about same. Some people had to pay extra after they gave the car back. Not worth renting from them!!!!!

  Terrible experience (like most others have had with this company). I tried to find reviews for Goldcar on Trip Advisor but for some reason I couldn't find tanything - I am just now seeing all the horrible reviews on Google. Wish I would have seen the reviews when I was booking!

  3) if I chose to accept the "risk" of using my own insurance, they repeatedly warned me that my car would be broken into. "The thieves will see it's a hire car and smash your window. You will have to pay up to 2000 Euros, sir". The whole thing smacked of a protection racket.

  2) they wouldn't accept my third party insurance and lied to me that nothing would be covered (but of course that everything would be covered on their own expensive insurance policy).

  I gave back the car 1h late because I had to go to the police to press charges because I have been stolen, I said that to the guy who said there were no problems. 2 days later, they charged me 40€ for giving back the car 1h late.

  When I began telling people at my accommodation about my car hire troubles, before I finished my sentence they asked "was it Gold Car?". More than one person I've met here knew Gold Car are crooks so it's not just me, Gold Car are well known to be very very sneaky and forcing you into upgrades.
